North Fair Oaks Community Festival Scholarships
Retired public servant Gregory “Greg” Munks served as the sheriff of San Mateo County from 1977 to 2012. During his time in the office, Sheriff Gregory “Greg” Munks founded and organized the North Fair Oaks Community Festival in Redwood City, which took place for a number of years.
The festival was a free, 1-day event every year with food, arts, and activities. The event occurred each summer and featured a parade, live music, talent shows, and other entertainment. There were also craft stands and booths with information about local organizations.
A major part of the event was the Queen of the Festival competition. This yearly scholarship competition featured five young women who were college-bound, and the committee awarded various amounts to the winners each year. The women needed to perform well academically in school and prove community involvement.
The scholarships were funded by raffle tickets sold before and during the festival, which included raffle prizes such as travel packages and electronics. Additional proceeds benefited other youth programs in the San Mateo area, such as D.A.R.E, a drug awareness program.
